The role of pH in the activated sludge process
May 28, 2025
The microorganisms we use in the activated sludge system only grow well within a certain pH range. Typically, the acceptable pH range is between 6.5 and 8.5 su. “Normal” domestic wastewater usually stays within this range so little management is required. However, industrial or other contributors in your collection system can impact your need to manage pH closely, especially if alkalinity is low. Expect permit compliance trouble if your alkalinity drops and/or pH falls outside of this range. Your monitoring practices (frequency & location) should reflect the dynamics of your system.
How frequently do you monitor pH and where do you monitor it?
